About

Quintanamanvirgo, located to the north of the Ribera del Duero river, extends its long and narrow municipal district over the land of the Ribera. Like all the villages in the region, they are and have been eminently agricultural.

The first written reference to Quintanamanvirgo is found in the text of the Fuero de Roa: Emperor Alfonso VII gave a privilege to the inhabitants of the town of Roa in 1143, donating this town and the villages in its district. Quintanamanvirgo appears in this charter, although it is included in the municipal district of Quintanas, as at that time there was another Quintana in the current municipal district of Guzmán.

The oldest written reference to two Quintananeros can be found in the arbitration sentence issued in 1295 by Queen Doña Violante, in order to settle the differences that existed at the time over the method of grape harvesting in Roa and its hamlets.

In 1978, Quintanamavirgo became a Minor Local Entity and was voluntarily integrated into the municipality of Pedrosa de Duero.

The parish church of San Facundo and Primitivo (two saints of exclusive devotion of the Benedictine monks) and the hermitage of María Magdalena stand out, which was built in 1781 with the alms provided by the villagers, according to a large medallion inside the church. In 1992 it was restored, according to another medallion. In both cases with alms from the whole village.

The patron saint festivities are in honour of Saints Facundo and Primitivo and the Virgen del Rosario, held towards the last or penultimate weekend of August. They include events such as processions, regional dances (including the “La culebra” dance) and a float competition.

Quintanamanvirgo people’s name: quintaneros.
