About

This riverside town, which belongs to the municipality of San Esteban de Gormaz in Soria and is located 9 kilometres from the town itself, was declared an “Asset of Cultural Interest” with the category of Historic-Artistic Site in 2007.

Rejas de San Esteban had its origins in the Christian repopulations aimed at reinforcing the Duero line during the Reconquest. It therefore follows the settlement model of the Middle Ages: a castle on a hill from which the streets of the village are laid out in an east-west direction from Calle Real.

Rejas de San Esteban is set between two hills: El Castillo ( where the Muslim fortification was located), inside which there are underground galleries in which tombs have been found, and La Loma, from where the course of the river Rejas or Madre can be seen as far as its mouth at the Duero. The Muslim occupation of the site has left its mark throughout history. Proof of this are the place names that have remained, such as Cerro “El Castillo” or Fuente del Moro. In addition, there must have been a Muslim watchtower on Ribaribaldo Peak that had visual communication with Alcozar Castle and the watchtower of Quintanilla de Tres Barrios.

The most important elements of this place are, without doubt, its two temples, marvellous examples of Romanesque porticoed architecture on the Duero border: San Martín (a Site of Cultural Interest since 1980) and San Ginés.

In the surrounding areas, between the spots of “El Pontón” and “La Zarzona”, you can see the remains of the Hermitage of the Virgen de los Perales (some architectural and decorative elements can be found in the Cathedral of El Burgo de Osma).

The village also has examples of popular architecture from the Ribera del Duero in Soria, such as the houses built with masonry walls on the ground floor and wood and adobe on the first floor. The eaves are made of wood or tile. The roof is gabled and the tiles in this area are laid “Segovian style”, or as many visitors say: upside down.

Not to be forgotten are the constructions related to wine: underground cellars and wine presses also flood this place.

In addition to the aforementioned, this town also had a quarry, a hospital in the Valles area, a wax and ceramics factory and three mills. There was also a village called La Muñeca, which was depopulated due to an epidemic, and which has given rise to tales and legends.

Rejas de San Esteban celebrates its fiestas in honour of San Antonio (3rd June) and in honour of San Ginés and the Virgen de los Perales (currently 25th August).

Rejas de San Esteban is known by the locals as: rejanos / rejenses.
