About

In the province of Soria is San Esteban de Gormaz, one of the main towns in La Ribera (with more than 3,400 inhabitants), together with Aranda de Duero, Roa and Peñafiel.

Watered by the river Duero, San Esteban de Gormaz preserves interesting examples of popular architecture in its town centre. However, the architecture par excellence in San Esteban is Romanesque, with the churches of San Miguel and Santa María del Rivero, both located at the foot of the remains of the castle, standing out.

In an idyllic spot, the Town Hall has opened the Romanesque Theme Park, where the traveller can get to know the main Romanesque temples of Castilla y León up close through a walk among the models that represent them. You can also visit the Ecomuseum Molino de los Ojos and the Lagar de San Miguel. And you cannot miss in a riverside town like this, the district of underground cellars and wine presses sheltered under the hill of the castle, being the epicentre of the San Estebeños’ picnics. It is the most numerous underground wine cellar district in the whole of Ribera del Duero, with a total of no less than 298.

Climbing the Peña Magadena is the Cueva de las Salinas, a gallery with 19 engravings, protected as an “Asset of Cultural Interest”.

For all of the above, San Esteban de Gormaz was declared a Historic Site in 1995.

If we are talking about nature, the stage of the “Senda del Duero GR-14” runs through San Esteban de Gormaz thanks to its location on the banks of the Duero, a river crossed by the fantastic medieval stone brige, leaving a whimsical islet called “El Sotillo”. This Soria town also forms part of the Way of El Cid in his exile stage and of the Ruta de la Lana, a trade route that transported wool from La Alcarria and cloth from Cuenca, honey and cereal to Medina del Campo and Burgos, and which today crosses the town until it reaches Mecerreyes (Burgos), being one of the points of passage for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

In the summer season, two river beach areas bathed by the Duero itself provide relief from the heat of the river in this municipality, which is the backbone of our great river.

In addition to the aforementioned visits, wine tourists can also enjoy good gastronomy in San Esteban de Gormaz, with suckling lamb being the common representative point of the whole Ribera del Duero.

The patron saint festivities of this municipality in Soria are held in honour of the Virgen del Rivero and the Santo Cristo de la Buena Dicha (first weekend in September). Holy Week has been celebrated since the 16th century with the characteristic solemnity of Castile-León. The rest of the year, San Esteban de Gormaz continues to celebrate in a variety of ways: from a living nativity scene and the Three Kings’ race, through the “Tapea Ojalado” gastronomic days and the wine and food fair, to the evening of San Juan, the night of music and candles, the gathering of charangas, the day of the Peñas and the mediaeval market.

San Esteban de Gormaz has its own TOURISM OFFICE.

San Esteban de Gormaz is known as: sanestebeños, although they are also known as “los arrascapostes“.
