Santa María Parish Church
Gumiel de Mercado
About
In the square that bears its name is the parish church of Santa María, in Gothic style from the 15th century, with three naves. The main altarpiece is from the end of the 17th century, with giant Solomonic columns, in whose central street is the tabernacle, the Calvary and a late Gothic seated image of the Virgin and Child; flanking this effigy are two large canvases with Marian scenes of the Coronation and the Betrothal, and other small canvases from the end of the 17th century. Legend has it that during the last days of May 1813, the French soldiers in their retreat from the centre of Spain, passing through Gumiel de Mercado, tried to steal the image of Santa María la Mayor, but in August, thanks to the large number of holidaymakers, descendants of the village, the cultural association “El Duende” organises various courses, games and activities, aimed especially at children and young people, as the village was alerted and discovered them in the river as they had got their cart stuck when trying to cross it and abandoned it.
