Sotillo de la Ribera
About
Sotillo de la Ribera, former estate of the Duke of Lerma, is a municipality with a typical riverside landscape, with abundant vineyards and wineries dating back to the 17th-18th centuries. During the reign of Carlos III, this town (which benefited from the economic boom in wine) experienced its years of splendour, the materialisation of which can be seen in the elegant emblazoned buildings, including the Town Hall, the Casa de la Botica and the Palacio de los Serrano. The Parish Church of Santa Águeda, one of “the best in the Bishopric”, was also completed during this period.
In addition to these distinguished buildings, in Sotillo de la Ribera we can also find the following:
- Fountain and trough: both made of stone were finished in 1727, and constitute a clear antecedent of the Enlightenment actions. It is a functional work that is not without technical complexity. Located to the left of the old royal road, it replaces an earlier fountain built by the Duke of Lerma.
- Sculptures: carvings by Amancio Calvo, a mixture of religiosity, sensitivity and humanity. They can be found in different corners and spaces in Sotillo de la Ribera.
- Underground cellars: They are reputed to be among the best in the whole of La Ribera. Open in the San Jorge mountain, they are arranged on three levels around a conical hill. They are long galleries excavated in the earth, many with beautiful stone vaults, where the wine rests in darkness and silence.
If you like hiking, you can discover the natural surroundings of Sotillo de la Ribera by following the Path of the Hermitages: built in the 17th and 18th centuries, the five hermitages (San Isidro, Santa Lucía, Santa Ana, Nuestra Señora de la Virgen del Prado and San Jorge) are arranged on the ground forming two crosses, one larger and one smaller, contained within the first.
Sotillo de la Ribera celebrates its patron saint fiestas in honour of Santa Águeda (February). It also celebrates the fiestas of Nuestra Señora de la Virgen del Prado (September), but its Holy Week also stands out with the “singing of the Miserere”.
In Sotillo de la Ribera you can also see two of the unique trees of the Ribera del Duero, the Holm Oak and Sabina Albar de las Zapatillas.
Nowadays Sotillo de la Ribera is a prosperous village, it has several wineries producing Ribera del Duero wine, a black pudding and sausage factory, a restaurant, tourist accommodation, four bars… History, art, traditions, hiking, wine tourism and an exquisite gastronomy complete the offer that this village offers to the traveller.
