About

The underground cellar district of Sotillo de la Ribera (Burgos) is located on the slopes of the San Jorge hill, to the east of the town centre.

It is an enclave of reference in the architecture and culture of wine. The volume of wine that could be stored in these cellars exceeded that of neighbouring towns, reaching almost the volume of Aranda.

In 2021, the Sotillo de la Ribera Town Council catalogued this district of wine cellars through the architect Alfredo Sanz Sanza, making an inventory:

  • 86 bodegas that, together, reach a length of 3.1 km. Of these, 68% are in good condition.
  • 99 wine presses, most of which have disappeared (only 3 complete ones have been inventoried). The average capacity of these presses is 330 hl, with a total capacity of almost 33,000 hl.
  • 130 vats, with an average depth of 13 metres.

The map in the attached image shows the precision with which this study has been carried out.

The streets of this magnificent district of underground cellars are of special interest on the first Sunday in June, when the Wine Fair is held: “Sotillo, el Vino y Yo” (Sotillo, Wine and Me).

VISITS to the UNDERGROUND WINE CELLARS of SOTILLO DE LA RIBERA:

  • There are currently no visits open to the public to these wineries by the Town Council.
  • Most of the wineries in Sotillo de la Ribera belong to private individuals and associations.
