San Pedro Church
Valdeande
About
The church of San Pedro in Valdeande rises on a parapet built with ashlar stone and, above it, the current bell tower, whose first section could be related to the fortified tower from the 11th century. The second part of the tower and the portico of the church were built in the 13th century.
It was originally built in the 13th century next to an old fortified tower from the 11th century. Its forms are a mixture of styles. On the one hand, the portico is late Romanesque, the windows are from the Visigothic period and the main altar is Renaissance. However, the most outstanding feature is its Mannerist altarpiece. Painted in the second third of the 16th century by Pedro Berruguete, it is striking for its Plateresque skeleton decorated with grotesques and divided into five sections with three bodies and the final finial in which a group of painted panels with a clear Italian influence are embedded. This altarpiece is possibly the best altarpiece in the province of Burgos.
