St Stephen’s Church
Tórtoles de Esgueva
About
Tórtoles de Esgueva must have been walled and, at the end of the Middle Ages, the parish church of San Esteban Protomártir was built, attached to an old defensive tower that would form part of this encirclement, and was fitted out as a bell tower. It is a large church with three naves, covered by ribbed vaults, on which a variety of designs were designed. On the outside, there is no interesting façade, but the southern façade with a rose window is of particular interest.
Inside, it has a magnificent Renaissance altarpiece dating from the 16th century. The Romanesque baptismal font dates from the 13th century, with simple semicircular arches around the top.
The parish church of San Esteban Protomártir was catalogued as a “Bien de Interés Cultural” with the category of “monument” in 1949.
