San Esteban Church
Roa de Duero
About
In the southeast of the hill, the church of San Esteban is located safeguarding the ancient walls, a rustic construction with a medieval defensive tower. Above the doorway, dedicated to the saint after whom it is named, we find inscribed the date of its construction in 1611, which details the solidarity of the inhabitants of Roa, as this church was a work of almsgiving between neighbours of the parish of Santestebeña.
The building is Gothic in style and today it conserves two of its three naves, due to the numerous remodelling works that the temple has undergone.
There are several altars shared by the church, among which the Santísimo Cristo de San Esteban and the Cristo de Durón stand out, which legends and traditions have echoed on several occasions.
Among the rest of the pieces, there is a small collection of large images of various saints, as well as several sargas with scenes from the Passion of Christ painted on them.
The church houses the Holy Week imagery inside, which is robust and of considerable size, as well as maintaining the austere traits of the Castilian Passion, which is why this church is also known as “La de los Judíos” (The Church of the Jews). During these dates, this temple is the epicentre of almost all the processions, being practically the only time of the year when it can be visited.
