History takes us to this riverside municipality to recall the journey of Juana “la Loca” through these lands of Burgos in the 16th century, temporarily converting Tórtoles de Esgueva into the Court of the Crown of Aragon:
- Year 1506. After the unexpected death of Philip “the Handsome” in Burgos at the age of 28, his wife decided to undertake a journey to Granada so that he could be buried there. Eleven months later, the funeral procession made its entrance in the middle of the night through the streets of the riverside town of Tórtoles de Esgueva, which was to be the scene of the meeting between Juana and her father Ferdinand “the Catholic”. It is probably the place where the husband of Isabella the Catholic takes the decision to incapacitate his daughter, after learning of the journey she has undertaken with the body of her husband.
- Juana continued to travel with her husband’s body through the lands of Burgos until she was finally confined to the town of Tordesillas in Valladolid until her death in 1555 at the age of 75.
Tórtoles de Esgueva celebrates its fiestas in honour of San Isidro Labrador (May), San Esteban (August) and Nuestra Señora del Rosario (October).
Tórtoles de Esgueva is known by the locals as: tortolicos / tortoleseses. Their nickname is “pelaires”.
