Tubilla del Lago
Tubilla del Lago
About
Located in the province of Burgos, 17 kilometres from Aranda de Duero is the riverside town of Tubilla del Lago.
It is one of the oldest towns in the region, with its origins dating back to the 9th century, when the reconquering and colonising vanguards of Castile reached the Ribera del Duero. The current clock tower bears witness to the medieval origins of this municipality: it is the remains of an ancient castle from the 10th century, from which the valley of the river Gromejón can be seen.
For a long time it was called Tubilla, whose name comes from the Latin word tuillan, which means tuff (calcareous tuff abounds in the course of the Gromejón, the river that placidly bathes this locality). To distinguish it from other “Tubillas”, it was given the surname “del Lago”, presumably on the basis of a geographical fact, since there is currently no lake.
Tubilla del Lago is particularly important for its wealth of natural springs (such as Fancaliente and Los Ojos), which even supply water to nearby towns. In addition, on the outskirts we find the “Valcabadillo lagoons”, recovered in 2007 to increase the biodiversity of the region, giving meaning to the name of this riverside village. You can enjoy this natural spot by following the Sendero del Gromejón.
Tubilla del Lago has:
- The Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción from the 16th century, with Romanesque remains.
- The hermitage of San Marcos (13th century), with a marked Cistercian character, is located two kilometres from Tubilla del Lago. It is the only surviving building in the town of Quintanilla de los Caballeros.
- The hermitage of San Miguel, located to the northwest next to the cemetery.
Its festivities are held in honour of its patron saint, the Virgen de la Asunción (15th and 16th August) and its patron saint, San Miguel (29th September). San Marcos is also celebrated (25th April) with a beautiful pilgrimage next to its hermitage.
In Tubilla del Lago there are two bars, a bakery, municipal swimming pools, park, pelota court, tennis court and speed track.
In 2017 Tubilla del Lago launched the “Route of the artistic murals“: a group of artists wanted to improve the image of the village by converting old façades, walls and doors into art. There are already about twenty murals painted to date.
The name of Tubilla del Lago: tubillanos.
