Vadocondes Underground Wineries
Vadocondes
About
The underground cellar district of Vadocondes (Burgos) is actually made up of two districts: ‘el de arriba’ and ‘el de abajo’. Both are located on a hillside separated from the town centre, on the opposite side of the national road that leads to the municipality.
This district of wineries stands out for its traditional wine presses, a great regional reference point. The “zarceras” that can be seen on the hillside bear witness to the underground reality, with brick arches predominating in the cellars.
In 2017, this winery district was invented by the Vadocondes Town Council through the architect Alfredo Sanz Sanza and catalogued:
- 78 cellars, with an average length of 33 metres, reaching a total length of 2.5 km. The cellars are arranged in two levels of overlapping galleries, at a depth of between 1 and 5 metres.
- There are 116 wine presses, some of which are still used to make wine, an unusual occurrence today. On several occasions they are grouped together in the same building, and there are cases of double and triple wine presses. The total wine capacity of these wine presses was 24,000 hl.
- 98 wine presses.
The map in the attached image shows the precision with which this study has been carried out.
