About

Valbuena de Duero is a riverside municipality in the province of Valladolid, 40 km from Valladolid and 190 km from Madrid.

The original settlement dates back to the Chalcolithic period, being located in the town of Valbuena de Duero itself. Subsequently, in the municipality there are remains of Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman, Visigothic and medieval settlements. Among them, the Roman settlement around the hermitage of San Martín in the western part of the town of Valbuena de Duero stands out. The historical information on the town of Valbuena dates back to the donation of the place made by Queen Urraca to Countess Estefanía, daughter of Count Armengol, who in turn ceded it to the Queen in 1143. The historical importance of Valbuena de Duero means that it forms part of the Valladolid routes of Charles V and the Infante Don Juan Manuel.

Located in the heart of the Ribera de Duero and internationally renowned for the importance of its wines, Valbuena de Duero, together with its hamlet, San Bernardo, form a homogeneous environment, delimited by a set of routes, which has come to be known as “The Duero Ring”. These routes are structured by the River Duero, which together with the rest of the natural elements, give shape to the impressive landscapes that coexist in its territory, characterised by their diversity and dynamism, varying substantially depending on the season of the year in which we find ourselves, which favours the practice of hiking activities such as stage 12 of the Senda del Duero GR-14 or the footpath En la patria del buen vino (In the land of good wine). Anillo de Valbuena (with fantastic views from its viewpoint), running, animal and plant species observation and astronomical observation. We also found ourselves looking at the monastery with the “Cueva del Hermano Diego”.

Among its most significant heritage sites, we can highlight the restored Church of Nuestra Señora del Castillo, the arch that gave access to the old wall, the extraordinary natural site of “La Isla, the different existing routes and the wineries in the municipality of Valbuena de Duero. Special mention should be made of the nearby Monastery of Santa María de Valbuena (located in San Bernardo), declared an “Asset of Cultural Interest” and the permanent headquarters of the “Las Edades del Hombre” Foundation.
