Valcabadillo Lagoons
Tubilla del Lago
About
The Valcabadillo lagoons cover a total surface area of 23,000 m2 in the riverside municipality of Tubilla del Lago (Burgos). They are shallow lagoons, with an average depth of 1.5 metres, although there are areas with a greater depth. The lagoons are connected by a small artificial spillway and their water supply is of natural origin as it comes from springs.
In 2007, Tubilla del Lago began work to restore the lagoons with the aim of increasing the biodiversity of the region, using them as a refuge, feeding and breeding area for aquatic birds, providing birdwatchers with an interesting place for birdwatching, with sightings of species such as grey herons, mallards and red-crested pochards.
With the recovery of the lagoons, the aim was to allude to the surname of the village and to make “del Lago” meaningful again.
The Valcabadillo lagoons form part of the Gromejón river path, which starts in Tubilla del Lago, goes as far as Villalbilla de Gumiel and ends at the lagoons after almost 14 km of nature walking.
