About

Valcavado de Roa is a village located in the south-west corner of the province of Burgos, on the right bank of the Duero, on an ochre and open terrazzo whose buildings are grouped longitudinally along the cornice on the slope of the moor at an altitude of 900 metres, allowing you to look out over the Ribera del Duero as if it were a natural balcony. For this reason, Valcabado de Roa is known as “the Balcony of the Ribera”, and its views are spectacular, with a magnificent viewpoint overlooking part of six provinces.

Of interest is the group of traditional wineries in a small grove of gall oaks on the left-hand side of the access road. Also of note is the unique group of eaves, which form part of the roofs of Valcavado. It also connects with neighbouring Pedrosa de Duero via the path “entre el aire y el remanso”, a magnificent walk that can also be done by bicycle.

A journey through the history of Valcabado de Roa:

  • The present-day personality of the Villa begins in the 10th century, when Count Nuño Núñez incorporated the old Vaccean and Roman town of Roa into the County of Castile.
  • In 1143, Emperor Alfonso VII granted the charter of Sepúlveda to Roa and its Community. This document encouraged the settlers already present and those who wished to come and increase the population, granting them exemptions from certain taxes and facilitating administration, especially judicial administration.
  • At the end of the 15th century, the Communities disintegrated because the kings transferred their responsibility to high-ranking politicians and members of the so-called nobility, turning them into private lordships. Every six years, Valcavado and the Count of Siruela renewed their contract of dependence.
  • In 1843, the population of Valcabado de Roa numbered 71 inhabitants, who maintained their lives and spent their time in the church of La Asunción and the chapel of San Lorenzo, in the cereal fields, in the vineyards and in the vegetable and potato fields.
  • In 1978 it became a “Entidad Local Menor”, voluntarily integrating itself into the municipality of Pedrosa de Duero.

Nowadays, Valcabado de Roa has regained its breath with the revaluation of the local products, especially the wines.

This municipality in Burgos celebrates its patron saint fiestas in honour of San Lorenzo (10 August). It also celebrates Santa Bárbara (4 December), a pig slaughter festival with four days of pork tasting.
