About

This riverside municipality is located 30 kilometres northeast of Aranda. The river Esgueva bathes its western part, creating an extensive fertile plain, and the river Gromejón (a tributary of the Duero) irrigates the outskirts of the village.

We recommend visiting the Roman site of Ciella, located in a territory crossed by one of the roads that connected the Roman city of Clunia with the Arlanza valley, as well as the Archaeological Classroom where life in ancient Ciella is virtually recreated.

Other places of interest and advisable to visit are:

  • Church of San Pedro Apóstol: a temple built in the 11th century and mixing different styles (Gothic, Renaissance and late Romanesque). The altarpiece is of great artistic quality, dating back to the mid-16th century (Plateresque Renaissance period), and is attributed to Pedro de Berruguete. The altarpiece depicts the life of Jesus, the life of Saint Peter, including his martyrdom, and in the upper section, the lives of four of the saints of the area: Saint Roque, Saint Sebastian, Saint Dominic Abbot and Saint Bernard. It was restored in 1990.
  • Hermitage of the Virgen del Juncal, at the foot of the river Esgueva.
  • Fuente Vieja (Old Fountain): located in the upper part of the village. It takes the form of a chapel and has access to the spring through a double door. It is of Romanesque origin, although it was rebuilt in 1703.

In addition to these monuments, we can walk along the Sendero de Ciella and the Roman Legacy and Villas of the Ribera del Duero Route , 56 km long, which will allow us to discover some of the most characteristic corners of the Ribera burgalesa with the greatest historical and artistic value.

At the top of the mountain there was a castle that was destroyed by Almanzor. Its viewpoint is well worth a visit, as is that of Pico del Mortero: fantastic views!

In Valdeande you can also see one of the unique trees of the Ribera del Duero, the Moral de Valdeande.

Valdeande celebrates its fiestas in honour of San Pedro on 29 June and in honour of the Virgen del Juncal (or Virgen Negra, one of the few in the area) on the second weekend in September.
