Valdearcos de la Vega
Valdearcos de la Vega
About
Near Peñafiel, in the heart of the “Valle del Cuco”, 66 km from Valladolid, this village offers a treasure trove of architecture and a surprisingly green landscape in the Castilian plateau.
Its jewel in the crown is the parish church of La Asunción, built in the 15th century. Made of stone and with a single nave, it is topped with a groined vault with plasterwork, and counterbalanced by buttresses. The ribbed vault with tercelets in the main chapel and the groined vault in the sacristy also stand out.
In addition to this church, Valdearcos de la Vega has two small chapels:
- Ermita del Cristo: located at the entrance to the village from Peñafiel. It is small, made of stone and with a wooden frame.
- Ermita de la Virgen de la Zarzuela: at the exit of the village and similar to the previous one, also with a wooden frame.
In the centre of the village, which is situated on a small hill, there is a small square in the centre of which, in the centre of the square, its roll, probably dating from the Middle Ages, has survived the passage of time.
The town’s fiestas are concentrated almost exclusively on the last weekend in August and are hosted by the Virgen de la Zarzuela, although San Antón also plays a leading role at the beginning of the year (17 January). The Semana Cultural del Valle del Cuco, a week organised jointly by the five municipalities included in this valley, is also worth mentioning. The aim of this week is to bring their neighbours together, so that during the week it takes place in a different village, and at the weekend each year one village is the protagonist.
The tourist offer of this incredible village is completed with a pleasant walk along the banks of the Cuco, and with a climb to any of the moors, in order to get an overview of what is Valdearcos, and what is the Cuco Valley itself. The Las Pinzas path is also a fantastic option for exploring the surrounding area.
The local name for Valdearcos de la Vega: valdearqueños.
