Villálvaro
About
The riverside village of Villálvaro has been a district of San Esteban de Gormaz since the end of the 20th century.
This small town in Soria has one of the few examples of conical chimney architecture in the region. On the other hand, the old clothes washing places have been restored and it is said that the water from the fountains of Villálvaro is the second best in the province of Soria.
Villálvaro has three churches:
- The Church of San Mamés.
- The Chapel of San Pedro, of Romanesque origin.
- The Ermita de la Virgen de Las Lagunas, a place of pilgrimage for the residents of Villálvaro and Zayas de Báscones, has just been restored. As an anecdote, the locals themselves took charge of safeguarding the carving and the stones when the hermitage had collapsed, until it was put back on its feet. For this reason they share and exchange the carving with Zayas de Báscones, taking care of it every half year.
Signs of the fantastic natural environment that Villálvaro possesses are the cycling route of the Camino del Cid, the Ruta de la Lana (a trade route that transported wool from La Alcarria and cloth from Cuenca, honey and cereal to Medina del Campo and Burgos, and which today crosses the town as far as Mecerreyes (Burgos), being one of the points of passage for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela) and the majestic white poplar tree fused with ash, almost 29 metres high, which can be found in the Ribera del río Rejas forest.
Villálvaro celebrates its fiestas in honour of San Pedro (29 June) and also in honour of San Mamés (7 August).
Villálvaro’s local name: villalvarinos.
