Villovela de Esgueva
About
In the valley of the river Esgueva lies this riverside town in the province of Burgos, which in the 1970s became part of the municipality of Tórtoles de Esgueva.
In Villovela de Esgueva you can visit the late Romanesque church dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel, which fuses two styles (Gothic and Romanesque). It has a beautiful 16th-century altarpiece and a choir of undoubted artistic value.
On the other side of the river Esgueva and near the hermitage of Santa Lucía, along the route of the “path of the mulberry and the valleys“, you will find a unique mulberry tree, whose size exceeds 9 metres in perimeter, and which is registered in the catalogue of unique trees of the Junta de Castilla y León.
There is a legend about the spring of the Fuente de Casi Vino, do you know it? It turns out that in the 13th century the novices of the convent of Nuestra Señora de los Valles were in charge of going to Villovela de Esgueva to get wine for their consumption. The novices, on their way back to the convent, made good use of the excellent wine and, fearing reprimand from the monks, would stop at a spring, refilling the wineskins they had emptied with water. On arriving back at the monastery, the monks did not notice the difference…. Was it a miracle? Since then, the spring has been known as the Fuente de Casi Vino, which gives its name to the cross that takes place in this charming riverside village.
Villovela de Esgueva celebrates its fiestas in honour of Santa Lucía on the third Sunday in August.
The inhabitants of Villovela de Esgueva are nicknamed “raposos”.
