About

The municipality of Zazuar is located in the Ribera del Duero region of Burgos, 12 km northeast of Aranda de Duero. Its main watercourse is the river Arandilla (a tributary of the Duero) and the highest point in the municipality is the “Alto de la Casa“, at 916 metres above sea level. The municipal area is mainly devoted to the cultivation of vines, cereals and pine, juniper and holm oak forests.

Places of interest include:

  • An important group ofunderground cellarsin the centre of the village. There are around 50 of them, many dating from the 17th century.
  • Church of San Andrés. Of large dimensions, its construction began in the 16th century and lasted about two centuries. Zazuarinos call it “the most beautiful lady”.
  • Hermitage of San Vítores. The statutes of the Brotherhood date back to the 17th century.
  • Rollo de Justicia in the town’s Plaza Mayor, declared an “Asset of Cultural Interest” in 1963. It consists of a shaft with rectangles on a tiered base and a pyramidal top with mouldings.
  • It is anagricultural landscape of great ecological value made up of small plots of land, woodland, riverside vegetation, walnut trees, banks, vineyards, wasteland, etc…

The natural environment of Zazuar allows you to enjoy the vineyard path, shared with the neighbouring village of Quemada.

In terms of gastronomy, we can especially enjoy the products produced in traditional slaughtering and lamb roasted in a wood-fired oven or, as is more typical in the village, suckling lamb chops grilled on the ground over vine shoot embers.

The patron saint fiestas are held in honour of Santa Isabel (July) and San Andrés (30 November). Other festivals celebrated in Zazuar: San Vitores (28 August) and cultural week (August).

The typical dance of the municipality is the “Danza del milano“.
