Zuzones
About
Zuzones is a riverside town in the southeast of the province of Burgos, on the border with the province of Soria. It belongs to the municipality of La Vid y Barrios.
On the banks of the Duero River lies this municipality, where various Roman remains from the Late Roman period (known as La Fernosa) have been found, indicating that it was possibly a burial place for the inhabitants of other more important nearby towns.
The church of San Martín de Tours stands out. In addition, on the outskirts of the town centre there are a number of underground cellars, some of them with a wine press. In 2021, the La Fernosa Association undertook the restoration of a wine press with more than 200 years of history in its walls, which has now been converted into a museum.
By way of anecdote, it is worth noting that Zuzones is the last village in the Spanish alphabet .
Popular festivities in Zuzones:
- 13 June in honour of San Antonio de Padua.
- 11 November in honour of its patron saint, San Martín de Tours.
The inhabitants of Zuzones are called “jitos”.
