Three tourist resources of the Ribera del Duero Wine Route triumph in the 7th edition of the Wine Tourism Awards ‘Wine Routes of Spain’.

Aranda de Duero, 29 October 2024

Three tourist resources of the Ribera del Duero Wine Route, the municipality of Peñafiel (Valladolid), the Museum of Aromas (Santa Cruz de la Salceda, Burgos) and the Museum of Traditional Games (Aranda de Duero, Burgos), have been awarded in different categories in the seventh edition of the Wine Tourism Awards ‘Wine Routes of Spain’, in what is a milestone for this territory. The Ribera del Duero Wine Route is the third most visited in Spain, with a total of 368,537 visitors.

Peñafiel has received the Award for Best Wine Tourism Municipality for its effort and determination to maintain an idiosyncrasy linked to the wine world that “has determined for centuries the architecture, landscape, customs, festivals and the way of relating to society, adapting and continually adding new resources either through winery, museum, heritage or cultural projects“.

The Aroma Museum, winner of the Prize for the Promotion of Inclusive Wine Tourism for the development of a unique space in which science and leisure come together “in a tour that makes us aware of biological aspects that determine many of our actions and behaviours“; also for the complementarity of its proposal with the world of wine, the approach to science in a simple and fun way for children and adults and for its effective adaptation to all kinds of people, “preparing the visit in advance so that it is accessible and adjusted to possible limitations or disabilities“. It has also been valued its parallel project of training assistance for people who have lost the ability to smell and its ‘travelling museum’ service that takes its proposal to schools, residences and companies.

The Museum of Traditional Games won a Special Mention in the Award for the Protection and Enhancement of Heritage for “the great work of conservation and promotion of cultural and popular leisure heritage over almost thirty years, as well as for having been able to see and understand the importance of this conservation, which concerns a fragile and delicate intangible heritage“. The jury also valued the dynamism of its manager, the La Tanguilla Association, which has led them to organise training courses for monitors of traditional games and to organise exhibitions that have travelled around Spain and countries such as Italy, France, Portugal or Tunisia, or to participate in national and international congresses and festivals; as well as for their relationship with and support for the wine and wine tourism sector, making known ancient games related to wine culture.

In this edition, a total of 123 candidatures were presented, from 27 of the 37 Wine Routes that currently make up the Wine Routes of Spain brand. A multidisciplinary jury made up of 10 people from different sectors met last week in Alcázar de San Juan to evaluate the different candidatures. The awards gala will be held on 15 November at the Reina Sofía in Madrid.

The award winners

Peñafiel is a town of some 5,000 inhabitants that receives some 73,000 tourists every year, according to figures from its tourist office. Its heritage includes the imposing silhouette of its castle, located on a promontory that can be seen from different points dozens of kilometres away, which houses the Provincial Wine Museum. Its Plaza del Coso square is also outstanding, as are its churches, the Sacred Museum and the Casa de la Ribera.

The municipality has a good accommodation infrastructure and varied gastronomic options, as well as a beach area on the banks of the Duratón river. Its fiestas, closely related to bullfighting and the local peñas, are of Regional Tourist Interest and Easter Week is of National Tourist Interest for its peculiar ‘Bajada del Ángel’ (Descent of the Angel).

The Museum of Aromas, located in Santa Cruz de la Salceda, (Burgos), is the first and only museum in Spain and Europe about smell, combining a recreational part of enjoyment in the recognition and analysis of different aromas and another, focused on research (CSIC, ONCE Foundation, among others). Precisely its project with ONCE to promote greater inclusion of visitors has been worthy of this new award.

The Museum of Traditional Games ( Aranda de Duero, Burgos) was promoted by the La Tanguilla Association with the aim of recovering games, sports and toys from previous generations which, due to the evolution of society, were at high risk of being permanently forgotten. The museum has a very complete exhibition with materials from many corners of the world and plans numerous activities to disseminate the recreational heritage of different periods.
