Old or Main Bridge of Aranda de Duero
Aranda de Duero
About
Also known as the MAYOR bridge, this mythical bridge has undergone numerous works due to the fact that it formed part of the National I road until the 1980s.
As for its origin, there is no record of any Roman road crossing the Duero at this point, but in the 12th or 13th century there was already a bridge that gave access to the main gate of the wall of Arandina. Of course, at the beginning of the 14th century this bridge already existed, and it was the troops of Ferdinand IV who tried to demolish it.
Repairs were carried out at the same pace as the devastating floods of the Duero, such as the one in 1658, which even reached the Plaza Mayor. Nowadays these floods do not occur with the same intensity thanks to the existence of reservoirs in the province of Soria that regulate its course.
Most of the current bridge (the three current semicircular arches, as it originally had four spans) is a reconstruction from the 19th century during the reign of Alfonso XIII, when it was also widened.
In the mid-20th century, an asphalt solution was adopted for fear that it would not be able to support the weight of a cobbled solution. The part of the curve towards Postas street was also widened, a point where a few months ago a roundabout was drawn to make traffic circulation more viable.
In 2016, a new abutment was built on the left bank of the bridge to reach the back of the Michelin sports centre via the “green ring”.
A beautiful counterpoint is provided by its famous railing, also a symbol of the town of Arandina, made of cast iron with a star-shaped design that gives it its own personality. It is very similar to that of the Bidasoa bridge in Irún on the same Nacional I or the iron bridge in Logroño.
