Vadocondes Railway Bridge
Vadocondes
About
Vadocondes was no stranger to the arrival of the railway. The passage of the Valladolid-Ariza railway line through this municipality in Burgos is marked by this very interesting bridge, now in disuse, which was included in the project of this railway in 1864, although its works did not begin until 1892, and the line was put into operation in 1895.
It was designed by the engineer Theóphile Seyrig (Gustave Eiffel’s partner who won the competition to build all the metal bridges over the Douro on this line, whose common feature was the “Pratt” structure beams).
The Vadocondes metal railway bridge consists of twelve modules with sections in the form of a rectangular box crossed by a diagonal element. Despite the obvious deterioration, it is still possible to walk along the side corridors of the tracks, protected by railings.
It is a great point of reference and a contrast to the other bridge that crosses the Duero River as it passes through Vadocondes: the so-called “water bridge”.
