Smart Tourism Destination (ITD)
Towards smart, sustainable and inclusive wine tourism
The Ribera del Duero Wine Route is undergoing a transformation process to consolidate itself as a Smart Tourism Destination (ITD). This evolution involves the integration of new technologies, the optimisation of tourism management and a commitment to sustainability and accessibility, thus guaranteeing a more enriching experience for visitors and residents.
Since 2016, the Route has been working on the implementation of the UNE 178501 Standard, a quality standard that allows us to improve the planning, management and promotion of tourist destinations. This approach positions us as a benchmark in innovative wine tourism, ensuring that each visitor enjoys an authentic experience, connected and adapted to their needs, also focusing on the quality of life of residents.

A destination in constant transformation
In order to consolidate our position as a Smart Route, we have defined a model based on five strategic pillars that guarantee quality tourism that is competitive and aligned with current demands:
Governance: Effective coordination between the region’s tourism stakeholders, including local administrations, wineries, accommodation, restaurants and complementary services. Through the Route’s Technical Commission, we guarantee efficient and participatory decision-making.
Innovation: Incorporation of digital tools to improve the planning and promotion of the destination. We are implementing solutions such as artificial intelligence to personalise experiences, data analytics to better understand our visitors and digital reservation and customer service systems.
Technology: Use of mobile applications, augmented reality and interactive platforms to facilitate tourist information in real time. With this, we seek to improve connectivity and access to relevant information about the wineries, accommodation and activities on the Route.
Accessibility: Elimination of physical, sensory and cognitive barriers to ensure that all visitors, regardless of their abilities, can fully enjoy the destination. Through the positioning of the route as more accessible and specialised training, we promote a more inclusive route.
Sustainability: Promotion of an environmentally responsible tourism model, through the efficient management of resources, waste reduction and the conservation of the wine-growing landscape. We also encourage the use of renewable energies in the wineries and promote sustainable mobility within the Route.
Strategy and planning
The transformation of the Ribera del Duero Wine Route into a smart destination is not an improvised process, but the result of a structured action plan. To this end, we have developed a Master Plan 2024-2028, where we establish the objectives and strategic lines to be followed in the coming years.

This plan is complemented by the implementation of annual operational plans, which allow us to evaluate progress, measure the impact of the actions carried out and adjust strategies to optimise the tourist experience on the Route.
We also have a Tourism Observatory, a space for analysis where we collect and study key data on the influx of visitors, their profile and consumption habits. This information helps us to design more efficient strategies and to offer experiences that are better adapted to the interests of wine tourists.

Commitment to accessibility
One of the most important pillars of our Smart Route is accessibility. Our aim is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their physical, sensory or cognitive abilities, can fully enjoy wine tourism.
To this end, we have implemented various initiatives such as:
- Implementation of smart signage in 2016.
- Development of adapted routes and elimination of architectural barriers in wineries and tourist establishments.
- Creation of information materials in easy-to-read and sign language, such as the Online Guide with information on accessible resources.
- Awareness-raising and training for professionals in the sector in inclusive care.
